Day 24: Do what you want, not what others expect.

If you want to make everyone happy, don’t be a leader- sell ice cream. ~Steve Jobs

As I got older I realized that people expect more and more of you. They expect you to go to college for what they went for, do the things they never did, etc. Don’t listen to that. Do what you want because in the end if you are doing the things that they have told you to do and you do not like it you wasted time and money.

I also realize as I get older that people believe in you less and less. If you switch colleges and go somewhere new, if you go to a community college, or if you don’t go for the degree they told you to they believe you will not succeed.

Do what you want because, in the end, the thing you love will lead to a happier life than just doing something for money. Yes, money is a good thing, but if you are doing something that you love the money will follow when it is time. If you have a passion you will continue to do and be the best at that thing.

People will only tell you things that worked for them, but just because it worked for them does not always mean that it will work for you. It is like taking penicillin, yeah it will help people get better, but it will only cause someone like me, who is allergic to it, to break out in hives. Even though something is good and worked out for someone does not mean the same for you.

If art is something you are good at and passionate about go out and do it, same with music, writing, teaching, chemistry, anything you can think of, do it. It is okay to turn a hobby into a lifestyle, you just have to work to make it where you want to make it.

Look at a lot of big businesses, they all had to start out somewhere and they all started out pretty small. It wasn’t just the product that caused the business to boom, it was also the passion of the creator who made it and sold it to the people and these people had to work to get to where they are today.

It takes passion and drive to get someone to the place that they want to be whether that be the president, a CEO, a traveler, a teacher, or even a world famous artist. As long as whatever you end of doing is what you want to do and what you love you will make it to the place you envision yourself being one day.

Do what you want and not what people expect because it will make you happier and will push you to where you want to be.
